Advantages of Frozen Edamame

01/

Convenience and shelf life
Frozen edamame has a much longer shelf life compared to fresh. It can be stored in the freezer for several months without significant loss of quality. This reduces food waste and allows for bulk purchases, potentially saving money in the long run.

02/

Year-round availability
Frozen edamame ensures consistent availability throughout the year. Fresh edamame has a relatively short growing season, but freezing allows consumers to enjoy this nutritious legume regardless of the time of year.

03/

Promotes digestive health
Eating edamame can help regulate bowel movements for healthy digestive health thanks to its high fiber content. The amino acids found in edamame have also been shown to support the growth of probiotic gut bacteria for a healthy gut environment.

04/

It has calcium
Not only does edamame have vitamin k, which helps regulate calcium levels, it contains calcium itself. That makes it a double-win for your bone health.

Types of Frozen Edamame

Frozen shelled soybeans

Frozen shelled soybeans, also known as edamame beans, are a convenient and nutritious ingredient that can elevate various dishes with their unique flavor and health benefits. These bright green beans are harvested at peak ripeness and shelled for ease of use, making them a versatile addition to your kitchen.

Frozen unshelled edamame

Frozen unshelled edamame, also known as young soybeans in the pod, is a popular and versatile ingredient that offers numerous health benefits and culinary uses. This nutritious legume is a staple in asian cuisine and has gained popularity worldwide due to its rich flavor, ease of preparation, and impressive nutritional profile.

How Frozen Edamame is Produced

Growing edamame
Edamame is grown in a similar way to other types of soybeans. The beans are planted in the spring and harvested in the late summer or early fall. Edamame beans are typically harvested when the pods are still green and the beans are still immature.

Harvesting edamame
Edamame beans can be harvested by hand or machine. When harvesting by hand, the pods are simply picked from the plants. When harvesting by machine, the plants are cut and the pods are separated from the plants.

Blanching edamame
After harvesting, edamame beans are typically blanched. Blanching is a process of cooking the beans for a short period of time in boiling water. This helps to preserve the color and flavor of the beans and also helps to stop the enzymatic activity that can cause the beans to spoil.

Freezing edamame
After blanching, edamame beans are frozen. This can be done using a variety of methods, such as immersion freezing, air blast freezing, or cryogenic freezing. Immersion freezing is the most common method of freezing edamame beans. In this method, the beans are submerged in liquid nitrogen or another coolant until they are frozen.

Packaging edamame
Once frozen, edamame beans are packaged and shipped to retailers. Frozen edamame is typically packaged in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.

FAQ

Q: How do you cook frozen edamame?

A: The best way to cook (or reheat) frozen edamame is to boil it in a salted water bath. Even though you can easily put it in the microwave, I like seasoning the edamame by boiling it with salt for only one to two minutes. You can also use a microwave to reheat the edamame, but be careful not to overcook the beans.

Q: Is frozen edamame still healthy?

A: Edamame is good for your liver because it is rich in protein and fiber. Protein and fiber protect liver health and help your liver work well. Is frozen edamame healthy? Yes, frozen edamame is as healthy as fresh edamame.

Q: Is it better to steam or boil frozen edamame?

A: Most frozen edamame needs to be steam cooked before you use it in the recipe. I used fresh (not frozen) edamame in pods. Steamed it in boiling water for 5 minutes. Please check the package for instructions on how long to cook frozen edamame, cook according to packet instructions.

Q: Is frozen edamame already cooked?

A: It's important to note that only raw edamame should be boiled; the frozen variety is pre-cooked and can quickly become overly mushy. Take out a pot and fill it with some water. Next, sprinkle copious amounts of salt until it's seawater-like. Raw edamame should always be boiled in the pod.

Q: Do I need to defrost edamame?

A: First, bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, add the frozen edamame (no need to defrost), plus one teaspoon of salt. Boil the edamame until they're still bright green but starting to soften, about 4 minutes.
