Frozen Wild Strawberries with Species, Origin and Batch Evidence
We manage frozen wild strawberry projects for importers, ingredient distributors, jam and preserve manufacturers, premium dairy and bakery producers, beverage processors, foodservice suppliers and private-label brands. The product name is not enough: before quotation, we define the botanical species, harvest country and region, collection or cultivation model, crop year, whole-fruit size distribution, Brix, acidity, defect limits, microbiological program and packing.
Our primary wild-strawberry specification is built for Fragaria vesca, commonly called woodland or alpine strawberry. We do not substitute Sweet Charlie, A13, Hongyan, Honey or another Fragaria × ananassa cultivar under the wild-strawberry name. A cultivated small-strawberry option can be quoted separately when cost, volume or size uniformity is the buyer's priority.
Send the required species, origin, annual volume, application, pack format, destination country and destination port. We will return a comparable specification, identity-file list, sample plan and batch-testing option rather than an ambiguous one-line offer.
Product appearance is reviewed together with the species and origin file. A photograph alone does not prove wild identity.
The First Buying Decision: Wild Species or Small Cultivated Strawberry?
Search results often mix true woodland strawberry, alpine strawberry, ordinary cultivated strawberry and strawberry-flavoured products. That creates a commercial risk: a small cultivated berry may look plausible in a frozen photograph but deliver a different species declaration, aroma profile, size distribution, price and harvest volume. We resolve the identity before discussing grade.

Identity File Included in the Commercial Approval
For a wild-strawberry order, the approval pack identifies the commercial name and Latin name on the specification, supplier declaration, packing mark and COA. It also states the country and collection region, harvest dates or crop window, whether the fruit is wild-collected or cultivated F. vesca, and the lot code that links raw material to the packed batch.
Photographs, berry diameter and aroma are useful screening evidence but are not the sole identity method. Where the buyer's label, customs classification or claim policy requires stronger substantiation, we add a laboratory botanical-authenticity or DNA method agreed before production. The test laboratory, target markers, sampling plan and acceptance wording are fixed in the purchase specification.
If a source cannot provide a coherent identity chain, we quote it as cultivated strawberry or decline the wild claim. This protects the buyer from relabelling, claim withdrawal and inconsistent sensory results after launch.

The following values are a concrete starting specification for quotation. The signed order specification overrides the starting table when a destination market or process requires a tighter limit.

Size Distribution, Not an Oversized Berry Promise
True F. vesca fruit is normally smaller and more naturally variable than commercial F. × ananassa. We therefore report the declared band plus the actual distribution by count: ≤10 mm, 10–15 mm, 15–20 mm, 20–25 mm and above 25 mm. For an uncalibrated lot, the COA still records the measured distribution so the next shipment can be compared with the approved sample.
Grade A sized product contains at least 90% of berries within the contracted band; Premium contains at least 95%. A buyer can also contract an average count per 100 g when dosing or visible-piece density matters. The count is measured from five 100 g portions after separation in the frozen state.
Codex permits a 10% by-number tolerance for sized whole frozen strawberries. Our Premium target is tighter, but "Premium" remains our commercial grade and is never represented as a Codex or USDA official grade.
Diameter records turn "small berries" into a repeatable size distribution that can be checked at receiving.
Grade A and Premium Defect Limits
Defects are assessed on a thawed or frozen sample according to the item being measured. Results are reported by weight or count, not with vague descriptions such as "clean" or "few defects". Critical defects remain zero in the inspected sample for both grades.

Frozen manual inspection removes visible defects after IQF and before final packing.
Raw Material and IQF Process Control
Each intake lot receives an identity and origin check, harvest-date review, sensory inspection, maturity and Brix measurement, visible contamination check and acceptance record. Wild-collected programs add collection-zone mapping, collector or collection-point coding and separation from other berry species. Fruit that is mouldy, fermenting, heavily bruised or contaminated is rejected rather than corrected by freezing.
The process sequence is intake, chilled holding where required, washing with controlled potable water, calyx and stem removal, inspection, draining, individual quick freezing, frozen grading, defect removal, metal detection, weighing, packing, coding and storage. Processing time and temperature are controlled to reduce softening before freezing.
IQF freezing is a preservation step, not a kill step. Our standard program is intended for further processing such as cooking, pasteurisation or another validated control. Any thaw-and-use or retail program requires a separately contracted microbiological and viral risk plan, validated label instructions and destination-market review.
The production flow is paired with batch records for intake, washing, sorting, freezing, packing and cold storage.
Microbiological Specification and Use Boundary
The standard panel below supports industrial further processing. Enhanced testing is available for a buyer with a retail, foodservice or non-thermal application, but test results do not replace hygienic sourcing and process validation.

Typical methods include ISO 4833-1, ISO 21528-2, ISO 16649-2, ISO 21527, ISO 6579-1, ISO 11290-1 and ISO 15216 or validated equivalent methods. The laboratory, sample size, composite method and release rule are written into the testing plan.
Pesticide Residues, Heavy Metals and Other Chemical Controls
We test against the destination market and signed buyer specification. For an EU program, each listed pesticide is compared with the current applicable MRL under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and amendments; where no specific MRL exists, the EU default is 0.01 mg/kg. The report shows the analyte, actual result, LOQ, applicable MRL and pass/fail result. "Pesticide-free" and "zero residue" are not used as blanket claims.

Batch COA: Values, Methods and Lot Link
A batch COA is issued against the packed lot, not as a generic template. It records product name, species declaration, origin, production date, lot number, best-before date, pack format, sensory status, size distribution, Brix, pH, acidity where contracted, defect results, microbiological results, chemical results included in the order and release decision.
The report contains actual numerical results. A microbiological line does not merely say "qualified"; it states, for example, aerobic plate count in CFU/g and Salmonella as detected or not detected in the defined test portion. Chemical reports include the method and LOQ so "not detected" can be interpreted correctly.
The traceability pack can also include the signed product specification, raw-material receipt record, production record, metal-detector verification, packing record, temperature record, pallet list, pre-shipment inspection and third-party report when ordered.
The lot code connects raw material, QC records, COA, packing and shipment evidence.
Wild strawberry is normally quoted whole or as processing material; cut forms depend on berry size and trial result.
Application Matching by Form and Sensory Target
Premium visible fruit: whole berries with Premium defect limits, ≥12°Bx starting target and a buyer-approved aroma sample suit premium preserves, fruit layers, plated desserts and high-fruit-content preparations where identity and berry count are visible.
Jam, filling and fruit preparation: uncalibrated whole fruit, broken fruit or processing pieces can reduce raw-material cost while retaining the contracted species. We align Brix, acidity, colour, seed load and cooking loss with the formula trial.
Dairy, beverage and puree processing: the buyer should define screen size, seed expectation, heat step, final pH and dosage. A puree is quoted under its own specification for mesh, Brix, pH, viscosity, foreign matter and packaging; it is not described as IQF whole fruit.
Freeze-drying input: whole integrity, size distribution, initial moisture, loading density and colour after drying are approved through a production trial. We do not promise dried yield from Brix alone.

Price terms can be quoted as FOB, CFR, CIF, DAP or DDP where the route is workable. The quotation names currency, Incoterm and named place, validity, shipment window, payment terms, included testing and packing. Rare wild-fruit supply is crop-dependent, so a fixed twelve-month price is not assumed.
Packing, Pallet and Cold-Chain Release
We approve carton dimensions and net weight before calculating container quantity. For palletised cargo, the pallet type, cartons per layer, layers per pallet, total pallet height, stretch wrap, corner protection and pallet labels are listed in the packing plan.
The reefer is clean, dry, odour-free and pre-cooled. Product temperature is checked during loading, and the set point is normally −18°C. A temperature recorder can be placed in the cargo when contracted. The bill of lading, packing list and invoice use the same product description, lot reference and gross/net weight.
At receipt, the buyer records seal status, recorder result, air and product temperature, carton condition, lot codes and a representative frozen sample before moving the goods into storage. Thawed and refrozen product is segregated for investigation.
Pallet pattern, carton count, labels and stretch wrap are fixed in the approved loading plan.
Sample Approval, Retention and Receiving Inspection
We recommend three approval stages for a new wild-strawberry program. First, a documentary sample establishes species, origin, harvest model and proposed specification. Second, a physical sample is checked for frozen appearance, aroma, size distribution, Brix, pH, acidity, defect rate and thaw behaviour. Third, the buyer runs the fruit in the intended jam, dairy, bakery, beverage or drying process.
After approval, one sealed reference sample is retained by the supplier and one by the buyer where practical. The production lot is compared with the approved reference using the same method. A change in species, source region, harvest model, crop year, process site, pack material or material specification requires written review rather than silent substitution.
Receiving inspection uses at least the agreed number of cartons across pallet positions. The buyer checks temperature, net weight, size, colour, odour, clumps, loose ice, defects and coding before production. A claim file includes container number, seal number, lot, pallet/carton locations, time-stamped photographs, temperature evidence, sampling method, retained sample and laboratory result. This evidence separates transport damage from a production-specification issue.
Documents Available by Order and Destination
Facility certificates are supplied only for the production site allocated to the order and only when current, in scope and requested. A logo or certificate montage is not used as proof that every site holds every certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the botanical name of frozen wild strawberries?
Our primary wild-strawberry program is specified as Fragaria vesca. Another species, including Fragaria virginiana, is treated as a separate project and must be declared in the contract and label review.
2. Are Sweet Charlie, A13 and Hongyan wild strawberries?
No. They are cultivated Fragaria × ananassa programs. We can quote them as a lower-cost or more consistent cultivated alternative, but we do not place them under a wild-strawberry specification.
3. What whole-berry sizes can you quote?
Natural uncalibrated, ≤15 mm, 10–20 mm and 15–25 mm are the starting options. Grade A provides at least 90% size conformity and Premium at least 95%.
4. What is the Brix range for Fragaria vesca?
The starting natural range is 10–16°Bx. Grade A starts at 10°Bx and the selected-aroma program at 12°Bx. Every production-lot COA states the actual result from thawed composite juice.
5. Are sugar, glaze or preservatives added?
The standard whole-IQF ingredient is 100% strawberry with 0% added sugar, 0% added glaze and 0% preservatives. Any sweetened or formulated product receives a separate ingredient list and specification.
6. Is the product wild-collected or cultivated?
Both supply models can exist for F. vesca. The quotation states wild-collected or cultivated, the source region and the identity records. We do not use "wild" to hide the harvest model.
7. Can you provide a species-authenticity test?
Yes, when required. The buyer and supplier agree the laboratory, DNA or botanical method, target markers, sample plan and acceptance wording before the lot is produced.
8. What defects are controlled?
We separately limit broken, crushed, unripe, blemished, calyx, stem, loose ice and clumps. Mould, decay, fermentation and hazardous foreign material are zero in the inspected sample.
9. Can you supply a batch COA with actual values?
Yes. The COA identifies the packed lot and records actual Brix, pH, size and defect results plus the contracted microbiological and chemical results, methods, LOQs and release decision.
10. Which microbiological tests are available?
The standard panel covers aerobic plate count, Enterobacteriaceae, E. coli, yeast, mould, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. STEC, hepatitis A and Norovirus GI/GII can be added under an enhanced contracted program.
11. Is frozen wild strawberry ready to eat?
Standard IQF fruit is supplied for further processing because freezing is not a sterilisation step. A non-thermal application needs a separately approved risk program, enhanced testing and destination-market handling instructions.
12. What packaging and MOQ are available?
The standard bulk pack is 1 × 10 kg per carton. Foodservice and retail options include 1 kg, 2.5 kg, 300 g, 400 g and 500 g packs. The starting MOQ is 10 MT for bulk and 20 MT per private-label artwork and pack size.
13. How much fits in a reefer container?
A 40 ft reefer carries approximately 24 MT floor-loaded or 22 MT palletised. A 20 ft reefer carries approximately 10–12 MT. The confirmed plan depends on carton, pallet, route and legal payload.
14. How should the product be stored?
Store and transport at −18°C or below. The stated shelf life is 24 months from production under an uninterrupted frozen chain. Product showing evidence of thawing and refreezing is segregated.
15. What information produces a comparable quotation?
State species, origin preference, wild-collected or cultivated model, form, size, minimum Brix, grade, testing panel, pack, label market, quantity, application, Incoterm, destination port and required shipment date.
