The Chilean Blueberry Commission reports that the Chilean blueberry season has been slightly delayed compared to the previous season and initial forecasts, but is now progressing well.
Andres Armstrong, Executive Director of the Chilean Blueberry Board, explained: "As of the 47th week, cumulative exports were 28% lower than the same period last year and 14% lower than the previous forecast. However, the lag will gradually catch up in the coming weeks as the harvest increases across regions, bringing actual exports in line with forecasts."
Armstrong added: "The good news is that while the weather has delayed the current season by relatively slow ripening, it has had a positive impact on the quality of our exported blueberries. The season has started with a record high in blueberry quality, which is confirmed by the Blueberry Council's weekly quality checks on member companies. This, combined with an increasing share of new varieties, has led to a very positive start for domestic growers and exporters. Data up to week 47 shows that 63 per cent of the blueberries exported this season are new varieties, a significant increase from 50 per cent for the same period last season."
Finally, it is worth noting that the members of the Chilean Blueberry Committee under the Association of Chilean Fruit Exporters (Frutas de Chile) continue to work to remain competitive and highlight the unique flavor characteristics of Chilean blueberries with excellent fruit condition, while constantly introducing new varieties into the planting season. "Committee members are proud of their membership logo, which demonstrates their commitment to quality, variety renewal and industry development." Armstrong concluded.
