Choose the Correct Blueberry Program

"Frozen blueberries" is not one universal specification. Cultivated blueberries are generally larger and are frequently selected for retail packs, visible bakery use and premium whole-fruit presentation. Wild blueberries are smaller, darker and more numerous per kilogram, making them useful for muffins, fillings, sauces, yoghurt preparation and processing. We do not substitute one type for the other without a written specification change.

Cultivated / highbush
Larger berry, normally 8–12 mm, 12–16 mm or 16 mm+. Specify size distribution, bloom, integrity, stem residue and broken rate.
Wild / lowbush
Smaller berry, commonly 5–15 mm. Specify count/kg where needed, cap stems, clusters, damage, drip loss and dark-blue colour.
Processing grade

Defect and Physical Acceptance Limits

We write defect definitions and the inspection basis into the order. Weight-based and count-based limits are not interchangeable. A 500 g laboratory sample can be used for detailed stems, clusters and foreign-material review, while larger composite samples improve representation for broken rate and size distribution.

Processing and Frozen-State Control

We receive berries by traceable lot and inspect maturity, colour, odour, stems, leaves, decay and foreign material. Fruit is washed under controlled water and sanitation procedures, drained to reduce surface moisture, size-graded where ordered and individually quick frozen.

After freezing, we inspect colour, berry integrity, size distribution, free flow, clumps, frost, stems and foreign material. Detection equipment, weight check, seal review and label verification are applied according to factory and order plan before the product enters frozen storage.

Standard whole IQF blueberries are not blanched. Puree, sweetened fruit, infused fruit and heat-treated preparations are separate product programs and require their own ingredient, Brix, process and microbiological specifications.

Microbiological and Chemical Safety

These values are an export starting specification for raw IQF blueberries. They are maximum acceptance limits, not an assumed result for every lot. The batch COA reports the Actual Result using the contracted method and sampling plan.

Packing and Private Label Control

We review inner bag, seal, net weight, carton strength, lot code and carton marks before release. Private-label projects add artwork, barcode, ingredient statement, nutrition basis, origin, storage text, label language and destination claims. Printed material is approved before mass packing.

Metal detection and X-ray capability depend on factory and pack configuration. The signed quality plan states the selected control, test pieces, verification frequency and corrective action. We do not claim that one equipment photograph represents every production site or package format.

Batch COA and Traceability

We link the COA to product name, blueberry type, lot number, production date, packing and sample identity. The specification column states the acceptance limit; the Actual Result states what was measured for that batch. Numerical results are not replaced by a copied limit or a generic "pass."

The order file can include Brix, pH, sensory inspection, microbiology, residue/heavy-metal reports by plan, specification, packing list, invoice, certificate of origin, health or phytosanitary documents where applicable, bill of lading and temperature records. Traceability connects raw material, production, packing, cold-store and shipment records.

Cold Chain and Receiving

We store and ship frozen blueberries at −18°C or below. Loading review covers lot, carton condition, quantity, reefer cleanliness, set point and seal. Repeated temperature fluctuation can increase clumps, frost, skin damage and drip.

At receipt, record container/seal identity, temperature evidence, carton condition and lot codes before sampling. Inspect frozen free flow and defects first, then use a controlled thaw method for drip, flavour and texture. Preserve unopened cartons, photographs and laboratory chain of custody if a claim requires investigation.

Sample Approval and Industrial Trial

We use samples to convert a general request into a repeatable purchase specification. Every sample should be identified with blueberry type, origin basis, size grade, lot number, production date, packing and storage condition. A sample represents the supplied lot and provides a useful sensory reference, but it does not replace numerical limits or eliminate normal agricultural variation.

Start the review while the berries remain frozen. Record free flow, surface frost, berry size distribution, bloom, colour, stems, clumps and visible damage. Then thaw a defined sample weight under a controlled time and temperature. Retain all released liquid so Brix and pH are measured on a properly homogenized sample rather than on selected juice alone. Record thawed integrity, skin splitting, softness, aroma, flavour and drip loss.

Retail trial
Assess the actual bag after frozen handling: berry-size distribution, bloom, visual damage, clumps, fines, seal, coding and net weight. A display-grade cultivated blueberry program normally places more value on whole appearance than a processing program.
Bakery trial
Record berries per unit, batter colour migration, berry breakage, moisture release and final piece distribution. Wild or smaller cultivated berries can deliver more pieces per kilogram and more even distribution.
Dairy and beverage trial
Review Brix, pH, seed/skin texture, colour, pumpability after crushing, settling and flavour after the customer's heat treatment or shelf-life process.

After approval, we transfer the relevant fields into the sales specification: product identity, type, size, Brix, pH, defects, drip method, micro limits, packing, label, pallet plan and documents. This prevents an approved cultivated sample from being followed by an unspecified mixed-size or wild lot.

Thawing, Drip Loss and Usable Yield

Price per metric ton is only one part of blueberry cost. A cheaper lot with higher broken fruit, stems, drip or unusable clumps can deliver a higher cost per kilogram of usable ingredient. We therefore connect frozen-state grade with the customer's thawing and processing result.

A controlled drip test begins with a defined frozen sample weight, container or screen, thawing temperature, time and endpoint. The released liquid is weighed and reported as a percentage of starting sample weight. Results from room-temperature thawing, refrigerated thawing and heat-assisted processing cannot be compared unless the method is the same. For wild blueberry programs, ≤25% is a practical starting maximum when that method is contractually defined. Cultivated retail fruit may require a tighter application target established by trial.

Drip is influenced by maturity, freezing rate, berry damage, temperature fluctuation and thawing method. Low drip alone does not prove better fruit: an underripe berry can remain firm while delivering weak flavour, and a ripe berry may release more colour and juice. We review Brix, flavour, integrity and drip together.

Organic, Certification and Market Scope

Conventional frozen blueberries are our baseline product. Organic status is supplied only for a certified organic crop, processing site and transaction scope supported by the applicable documents. We do not convert a conventional product into an organic product through wording, residue testing or packaging artwork.

Certification availability depends on the factory and order program. HACCP, BRCGS, IFS, ISO 22000, Halal, Kosher, organic certification and FDA Food Facility Registration serve different purposes. FDA registration is not a product certificate, and a general company certificate does not automatically cover every factory or SKU. We provide the relevant certificate copy and scope for supplier approval.

Destination compliance also requires product-specific work. The EU residue panel follows Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and current amendments; the 0.01 mg/kg default applies where an active substance has no specific MRL. USA programs may require supplier verification and FSMA-related records. Retail customers can add their own restricted-substance lists, micro limits, allergen questionnaires, packaging declarations and social-compliance documents.

Blueberries contain no intentionally added major allergen in the standard 100% fruit program. Nevertheless, the final allergen statement must reflect the processing site, shared-line controls and destination labelling rules. Non-GMO wording, nutrition information and origin claims also follow the actual product and supporting file rather than generic marketing text.

Receiving Inspection, Claims and Repeat Orders

Receiving inspection should use representative units from different pallet or container positions, not only one carton near the door. Record container number, seal, arrival time, reefer setting, recorder information, pallet condition, carton labels, lot codes and sample locations. Photograph the unopened carton and label before the sample is opened.

If product appears clumped, soft or frosted, keep temperature evidence and compare the affected cartons with other positions. A short air-temperature rise during door opening does not by itself establish product abuse. Product core condition, logger history, frost pattern, carton moisture and the distribution of the issue across the load provide stronger evidence.

For a physical claim, separate and weigh the disputed defect using the agreed definition and sample size. For a microbiological or chemical claim, use a competent laboratory, preserve the chain of custody and retain unopened product from the same lot. A message such as "too many stems" is difficult to investigate without the counted sample, net sample weight, lot identity and photographs.

Repeat-order control links raw-material reception, production shift, packing batch, COA, cold-store location and shipment. Natural colour and Brix can vary by crop, but the result must remain inside the signed range. A change of blueberry type, origin, size distribution, factory, process, packaging structure or laboratory method is reviewed before it becomes the new supply basis.

Your purchasing team should compare total usable cost. Large cultivated fruit normally commands a different price from small wild berries; a tight retail defect limit also costs more than sound processing grade. We match the grade to the application so the order does not pay for visual attributes that disappear during blending, nor accept processing-grade defects in a retail pack.

Quotation and Specification Lock

A workable quotation starts with the commercial use, not only the phrase "frozen blueberries." We ask whether the fruit will remain visible in a retail bag, be baked into muffins, blended into a beverage, cooked into sauce or processed into a dairy preparation. That answer determines whether cultivated or wild fruit, a large whole-berry grade or a processing grade provides the better usable value.

For a comparable offer, state the required blueberry type, origin preference, size range, whole-fruit or crumble format, Brix range, pH where relevant, defect limits, microbiological limits, residue plan, packaging, annual volume and shipment schedule. Include the destination country and the customer standard when it is tighter than the general market requirement. We then quote against one written supply basis instead of presenting several prices for products that are not technically equivalent.

The packing specification should identify inner-bag material and colour, net weight, units per carton, carton dimensions, coding format, label language, barcode, pallet requirement and whether the load is floor-loaded. For private label, artwork approval, printing tolerance, legal text and remaining packaging material are agreed before production. These details affect cost, MOQ and lead time and therefore belong in the commercial specification.

Before order release, the specification also records sampling and test methods. A Brix range without a preparation method, a drip limit without thawing conditions or a defect percentage without a sample basis can produce conflicting inspections. We write the applicable method, sample size and reporting unit beside the limit. The purchase order, approved specification and label must identify the same product type and grade.

For repeat programs, buyers can reserve crop-season volume and divide it into scheduled shipments. We monitor the remaining contracted quantity, lot allocation, packing-material balance and requested delivery window. When agricultural variation changes colour, Brix or size distribution while remaining within the signed limits, the batch COA shows the actual measured result. If a proposed lot falls outside the agreed range, it is not silently treated as the approved grade.

A complete RFQ therefore allows faster technical review and a more useful sample.
