For a fresh U.S. strawberry basket sold as a pint, about 12 oz by weight is the most useful short answer. California's fresh-berry standard pairs a dry pint with a 12 oz net weight, and many retail and recipe references fall close to 11–12 oz.
Do not replace that answer with "16 oz" without a label. A U.S. liquid pint contains 16 fluid ounces, which measure volume. Strawberries are traditionally associated with a dry pint, and the package may also carry a separate net weight. These are different measurements.
Pint is volume
A produce pint tells you how much space the fruit occupies. It does not guarantee identical weight from basket to basket.
Oz usually means weight
On a strawberry clamshell or frozen bag, "oz" normally means net weight. "Fl oz" is the volume unit used for liquids.
Form changes cups
The same 16 oz occupies more cups when the berries are whole than when they are sliced and packed with fewer air gaps.

Why the ranges are wider for pints and quarts: a pint basket is filled by volume, so the air spaces between berries matter. A labeled 16 oz clamshell is different: the packer is declaring net weight, even if the container looks pint-sized.

The short answer belongs to fresh pints
The familiar 11–12 oz estimate belongs to a fresh produce basket, not automatically to frozen fruit. Frost, broken pieces, cuts, and the way frozen berries settle can change volume. A bag marked 12 oz is reliable because the label states net weight; it is not reliable because the bag happens to resemble a pint container.
For commercial IQF frozen strawberries, we confirm the product form and net packing before discussing cup yield. Whole berries, halves, slices, and dice do not occupy the same volume or feed a production line in the same way.
How Many Cups Are in 8, 10, 12, 16 and 32 oz?
There is no single cup answer unless the form is named. Whole berries leave large air gaps. Halves settle more closely. Slices pack more densely again. Puree removes most of the air space and therefore weighs much more per cup.
The following estimates use about 144 g (5.1 oz) per cup for whole strawberries, 152 g (5.4 oz) for halves, and 166 g (5.9 oz) for slices. USDA sources do not always use exactly the same sampling and preparation language, so rounding to one decimal place is more honest than presenting many decimal digits.

For a forgiving smoothie or compote, these estimates are usually close enough. For jam setting, bakery moisture balance, nutritional analysis, or factory dosing, weigh the strawberries. NIST also recommends mass measurement when better cooking accuracy is needed because ingredient density makes volume conversions variable.
Whole, halved, sliced, and frozen fruit do not fill a cup the same way
Cutting reduces the air gaps between pieces. Freezing can add surface frost, create broken pieces, and change how the berries settle. Thawing releases juice, which changes both the apparent volume and the texture.
Keep the form consistent from the recipe or formulation to the measuring cup. "Two cups strawberries" is incomplete for precise work unless it also says whole, halved, sliced, chopped, crushed, or pureed.

Count is less stable than weight because strawberries are not manufactured to one size. How many strawberries equal 10 oz?
Ten ounces is approximately 16 large strawberries, 24 medium strawberries, or 40 small strawberries under the reference weights above. If the fruit is extra large, the number may fall near 10–14. If it is a small processing cultivar, the count can rise well above 40.

What changes the weight of one berry?

Use the estimate for planning; use the scale for decisions
A conversion chart can tell you whether to buy one basket or two. It should not decide a jam formula, a nutrition panel, a bakery inclusion rate, a purchase specification, or an invoice quantity.
When accuracy affects yield or acceptance, record the fruit form, tare the container, weigh the usable fruit, and state whether hulls or thaw liquid are included. That short method removes most of the ambiguity behind pint-to-ounce questions.
Why Strawberry Conversions Are Only Estimates
The uncertainty is not a flaw in strawberries. It comes from converting between different properties. Volume measures occupied space. Weight measures mass. Count measures pieces. One measurement cannot be translated into another without assumptions about size, shape, empty space, preparation, and condition.
A U.S. dry pint is about 550.6 mL, while a U.S. liquid pint is about 473.2 mL. A dry pint is therefore larger than the liquid pint used for milk or cream. A produce basket may be called a pint in normal trade even when a shopper thinks of two liquid cups. That gap alone explains many conflicting online answers.
The visible berry size range also matters. A container filled with large fruit has fewer gaps but fewer pieces; a container filled with small fruit has many more pieces and a different air-space pattern. Shaking or pressing the fruit changes the packing density again.
Fruit diameter changes piece count and packing behavior, so commercial size ranges should be confirmed separately from net weight.
Five reasons two "pints" can weigh differently
The pack may contain extra-large fresh fruit, uniform medium fruit, or many small processing berries.
Loose fill, settling during transport, or deliberate pressing changes the empty space between berries.
Unhulled fresh fruit and ready-to-use hulled fruit do not have the same usable weight.
Halves, slices, dice, crushed fruit, and puree progressively remove air gaps from a cup.
Frost, clumping, breakage, and released juice affect both apparent volume and usable yield.
How to Measure Strawberries More Accurately
Use this method when you need to convert a recipe, verify a serving, or compare a container with a stated net weight.
- Name the form. Record whether the fruit is whole and unhulled, hulled, halved, sliced, diced, frozen, thawed, drained, or pureed. Do not combine measurements from different forms.
- Tare the container. Put the empty bowl or measuring vessel on the scale and reset the display to zero. This removes the container weight.
- Measure without forcing the fill. For a volume check, add the berries naturally. Do not crush them into the cup unless the recipe specifies packed, mashed, or pureed fruit.
- Weigh the usable portion. If the recipe says hulled strawberries, remove the hulls first. If frozen fruit has thawed, decide whether the released juice stays in the formula and record that decision.
- Repeat when the lot varies. For commercial or high-yield work, measure more than one sample. Average weights from representative cartons or bags instead of relying on the most attractive handful.

A fresh produce pint is designed for retail display and short-term handling. Commercial frozen strawberries are bought as an ingredient. The key reference therefore shifts from a loosely filled volume container to net weight, product form, size or cut, packing format, and an agreed quality specification.

Retail and private-label programs are controlled by declared net weight, bag specification, label approval, and pack consistency rather than a pint estimate.
A labeled pack answers a different question
An 8 oz, 10 oz, 12 oz, 16 oz, or 32 oz bag states net weight. The bag's physical volume may change with berry form and settling, but the declared weight remains the purchasing reference.
For private label, the buyer should also confirm the bag material, dimensions, artwork, barcode, market language, carton count, carton strength, coding position, and applicable label review. A conversion chart cannot replace those controls.

Cut form changes commercial performance
Whole berries support visible-fruit presentation but create more variation in piece count. Slices cover a larger surface area and fit toppings or layered bakery products. Dice can improve dosing uniformity in fillings, yogurt, and ice cream. Crumbles or puree may be more efficient when visible pieces are not required.
The buyer's best conversion is therefore not cups per pound. It is usable yield in the final process: pieces per portion, fruit distribution, thaw loss, color release, pumpability, bake stability, or solids delivered to the formula.
