Head and stem proportions

Method D05-01 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Broccoli floret head versus attached stalk length and head-to-stalk ratio; record loose stems separately.

Sample state: Frozen intact florets/short spears, with style identified before tally.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan after declaring broccoli style. Any USDA comparison requires the actual style-specific official tally sheet and separate sample-unit assessment.

Inspection procedure: Measure stalk from floret head base to cut end, then separate head and stalk on a matched weighed subset; classify loose stems.

Calculation and reporting: For each of five units, on a preselected intact floret/short-spear subset: attached stalk length mm; separated head mass g / (head + attached stalk mass) g × 100%. Weigh loose stems g / full frozen net unit g × 100% separately. Report five ratios and pooled masses; do not apply to chopped style unless contract defines a different method.

Product control response: Adjust harvest cut and floret cutting blade; segregate long-stem output.

Records: Style designation, photos, ruler readings, weighed subset and cutter log.

Hold and release: Use buyer-signed style/length ratio; P03 sheet selection alone is not an agreed commercial limit.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method. USDA P03 is an official broccoli landing page with style-specific tally-sheet links; use the actual applicable standard, sheet and grade before claiming USDA conformance.

Sources: P03: USDA frozen broccoli grade-standard and tally-sheet landing page; actual sheet/style must be selected

Floret and cut size

Method D05-02 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Floret head maximum span and declared style (floret/short spear/cut piece) are two different checks.

Sample state: Firm frozen intact units before mechanical breakage.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan after declaring broccoli style. Any USDA comparison requires the actual style-specific official tally sheet and separate sample-unit assessment.

Inspection procedure: For declared florets/short spears, measure widest head span perpendicular to stalk; for pieces/cut/chopped style, measure the signed characteristic longest dimension or use a calibrated sieve/weight distribution instead. Record 50-unit florets/spears or 250 g pieces/cut/chopped USDA tally basis only when explicitly running the selected official sheet, separate from P1.

Calculation and reporting: Per declared style, out-of-contract-band units / all intact measured units × 100%, or signed weighed sieve fraction g / tested g × 100% for chopped material. Report unit basis and five P1 results; never call this a USDA grade without its actual standard/table.

Product control response: Tune cut guide and screen size; route over/undersize to matching style.

Records: Caliper calibration, size histogram, style photos and pack code.

Hold and release: Release by signed style and size band; select P03 tally sheet for actual style if invoking standard.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method. USDA P03 is an official broccoli landing page with style-specific tally-sheet links; use the actual applicable standard, sheet and grade before claiming USDA conformance.

Sources: P03: USDA frozen broccoli grade-standard and tally-sheet landing page; actual sheet/style must be selected

Colour and bud condition

Method D05-03 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Yellowed/open florets versus normal cultivar green variation; bud opening is counted apart from hue.

Sample state: Frozen under neutral standardized lighting; compare a limited controlled-thaw split only if frost masks buds.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan after declaring broccoli style. Any USDA comparison requires the actual style-specific official tally sheet and separate sample-unit assessment.

Inspection procedure: Photograph heads with color card; inspect bud closure at magnification, classify yellowing and flowering independently.

Calculation and reporting: Yellowed heads / all eligible inspected heads × 100%; open-bud heads / same denominator × 100%; both flags count, so percentages need not sum to 100%. Record overlap count and five individual plus pooled ratios; suspected decay/odor is separate QA hold.

Product control response: Review maturity at harvest, delay to freezing and blanching if applied.

Records: Color-card photos, bud references, raw lot/date and process log.

Hold and release: Hold against signed appearance references; unusual odor/decay enters safety hold rather than yellowing score.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method. USDA P03 is an official broccoli landing page with style-specific tally-sheet links; use the actual applicable standard, sheet and grade before claiming USDA conformance.

Sources: P03: USDA frozen broccoli grade-standard and tally-sheet landing page; actual sheet/style must be selected

Crumbs and fines

Method D05-04 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Detached broccoli buds/fines versus a broken but saleable floret; loose fines are weighed, not counted as whole heads.

Sample state: Frozen from unopened packs before thaw; handle gently to avoid creating fines.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan after declaring broccoli style. Any USDA comparison requires the actual style-specific official tally sheet and separate sample-unit assessment.

Inspection procedure: Separate full florets, broken florets and loose flower particles through signed sieve; weigh loose fraction.

Calculation and reporting: Use contract sieve aperture and gentle fixed handling. Loose floral fines g / full frozen net unit g × 100%; broken but countable florets / all countable florets (sound + broken) × 100%. Record any stem-only fraction separately. Five individual masses/counts and pooled ratios; no percentage averaging.

Product control response: Review cutter, blanching/conveyor handling and pack compression.

Records: Sieve opening, fraction weights, package location and before/after handling photos.

Hold and release: Apply signed fines and breakage criteria; P03 style-specific sheet must be chosen before standard comparison.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method. USDA P03 is an official broccoli landing page with style-specific tally-sheet links; use the actual applicable standard, sheet and grade before claiming USDA conformance.

Sources: P03: USDA frozen broccoli grade-standard and tally-sheet landing page; actual sheet/style must be selected

Leaves and fibrous stem

Method D05-05 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Attached leaves, detached leaves and woody/fibrous stalk are separate broccoli defects.

Sample state: Frozen visual separation; woody-stalk bite only under approved cooked product preparation.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan after declaring broccoli style. Any USDA comparison requires the actual style-specific official tally sheet and separate sample-unit assessment.

Inspection procedure: On the five frozen units, count attached leaves on all eligible intact florets and weigh detached leaves against each full unit. Preassign equal representative stalk-bearing portions for approved cooked-use test; record cook endpoint, blade/bite reference and serving temperature.

Calculation and reporting: Attached-leaf floret count / eligible floret count × 100%; detached leaf g / frozen unit net g × 100%; woody cooked stalk-bearing units / all cooked tested stalk-bearing units × 100%, with separate five-unit and pooled results.

Product control response: Improve leaf trimming and stalk cut location; segregate oversized stems.

Records: Three-category tally, weights, stalk measurements and approved cooked test record.

Hold and release: Release against signed category limits; no raw sensory judgment substitutes for cooked texture.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method. USDA P03 is an official broccoli landing page with style-specific tally-sheet links; use the actual applicable standard, sheet and grade before claiming USDA conformance.

Chaff

Method D06-01 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: For the USDA comparator, chaff is cauliflower material with or without head material under 6 mm in greatest dimension; stem-only fragments 6 mm or larger are a separate class, excluding tough core, loose leaves and chaff.

Sample state: Frozen product; declare clusters or nuggets/small clusters before grading.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring cluster or nugget style. USDA P02 requires separate 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget sample units and its selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Measure greatest dimension with a scale/template, separate chaff under 6 mm from fragments at least 6 mm, and weigh both. For the proposed P1 pilot examine each full analytical unit. When P02 is contracted, appearance including chaff is assessed on the entire container under section 52.724(m), not the 50-cluster/100 g aliquot for classified defects.

Calculation and reporting: P1: chaff g / examined frozen food g x100%; fragments g / same food g x100%, by position and pooled masses. P02 good-appearance comparator: chaff maximum 5% by weight for cluster style or 10% for nugget style, assessed on the entire-container sample unit; full grade prerequisites and lot plan still apply.

Product control response: Tune cutter and conveyor handling; collect fines without hiding them in sampled florets.

Records: Style, sieve aperture, class photos, fraction weights and adjustment log.

Hold and release: For USDA P02 claim, apply the exact selected style and grade/table; otherwise use signed contract limits.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen cauliflower P02 with its declared style, exact sample unit, defect factor, selected grade and table.

Sources: P02: USDA voluntary Frozen Cauliflower standard, effective 1996-09-26; use only selected style/grade/form

Size distribution

Method D06-02 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Clusters and nuggets/small clusters are distinct P02 styles; head diameter is the largest visible flower-head dimension.

Sample state: Frozen intact heads before thaw or breakage.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring cluster or nugget style. USDA P02 requires separate 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget sample units and its selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Measure greatest dimension across each curd top. P02 clusters are at least 20 mm; nuggets/small clusters are 6 mm to below 20 mm; chaff is below 6 mm. For a contracted P02 style, section 52.723 allows at most 10% by weight below 20 mm in clusters; nuggets allow at most 20% by weight at least 20 mm and at most 10% below 6 mm. Keep these source style allowances separate from the buyer size band.

Calculation and reporting: For P1 report count distribution among countable curds and separately weigh each size fraction / all examined food mass x100%; never compare count fractions with the P02 weight allowances. Record chaff and uncountable material separately. P02 lot sampling follows sections 52.728-729 and the cited inspection regulations; a 50-unit/100 g factor aliquot alone is not a lot plan.

Product control response: Calibrate grading screens and cutter; pack each style separately.

Records: Individual dimensions, USDA section/version, pack style and grader setting.

Hold and release: Use P02 only with matching declared style, grade and sampling table; no generic size percentage is a legal limit.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen cauliflower P02 with its declared style, exact sample unit, defect factor, selected grade and table.

Sources: P02: USDA voluntary Frozen Cauliflower standard, effective 1996-09-26; use only selected style/grade/form

Surface blemishes

Method D06-03 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Dark and light curd blemishes are classified by affected surface area on each unit; stain severity and normal cream color differ.

Sample state: Frozen curd exterior under fixed lighting; if frost obscures, apply agreed thaw state consistently.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring cluster or nugget style. USDA P02 requires separate 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget sample units and its selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Under P02 section 52.724(c), a minor dark blemish has aggregate area greater than a 4 mm-diameter circle but not greater than a 6 mm circle; a major dark blemish exceeds a 6 mm circle. A light blemish exceeding a 6 mm circle is minor. Use scaled area templates and sum areas on the same curd; do not classify by the longest mark dimension. Keep photos and separate major and total blemished tallies.

Calculation and reporting: For a contracted P02 evaluation, classified-defect aliquots are 50 cluster units or 100 g nuggets; follow the selected grade, table, required number of aliquots and lot acceptance procedure. P1 instead reports signed-photo affected count / eligible count x100% with five position and pooled results, labelled contract-only. Neither P1 nor one factor establishes a USDA lot grade.

Product control response: Improve raw-head trimming and sorter calibration; trace weather/field source.

Records: Scaled images, class tally, style/grade, sample-unit basis and lot identity.

Hold and release: Compare with the exact P02 table only when grade/style/sampling plan are selected; else signed contract rule.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen cauliflower P02 with its declared style, exact sample unit, defect factor, selected grade and table.

Sources: P02: USDA voluntary Frozen Cauliflower standard, effective 1996-09-26; use only selected style/grade/form

Core and leaf material

Method D06-04 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Tough core, detached loose leaves and normal edible stalk are three categories; core toughness needs prepared-use confirmation.

Sample state: Frozen visual inspection plus a matched safely cooked application sample for fiber judgment.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring cluster or nugget style. USDA P02 requires separate 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget sample units and its selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Separate loose leaves by weight, expose stem/core cross-section, then compare cooked core shear to approved reference.

Calculation and reporting: P1 loose leaves g / full frozen net unit g × 100%; cooked hard-core affected units / all preassigned safely cooked units × 100% and optional shear N with blade geometry. Report five unit and pooled results. A P02 claim records the style-specific core material/loose leaf factor in 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget units under selected table, separately.

Product control response: Improve coring and leaf trim; avoid over-cutting saleable curd.

Records: Cross-sections, weighed leaves, cooked test conditions and trim yield.

Hold and release: P02 factor tables apply only to its style/grade; hard bite gets a signed application rule.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen cauliflower P02 with its declared style, exact sample unit, defect factor, selected grade and table.

Sources: P02: USDA voluntary Frozen Cauliflower standard, effective 1996-09-26; use only selected style/grade/form

Cluster compactness

Method D06-05 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Compact curd versus loose, granular or fuzzy curd; distinguish physical curd separation from normal small-head style.

Sample state: Frozen intact units under neutral light, handled without squeezing.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring cluster or nugget style. USDA P02 requires separate 50-unit cluster or 100 g nugget sample units and its selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Turn each head; compare bud tightness/roughness to signed P02-style reference, photograph and record looseness by severity class.

Calculation and reporting: P1 contract assessment: class 0/1/2 compactness by signed photo anchors; loose or granular class count / all intact eligible curd units × 100%, five units and pooled count. For P02 claim, use its defined character/quality factor, selected style and 50-unit or 100 g units; do not relabel this photo score as a USDA grade.

Product control response: Adjust harvest maturity, raw sorting and handling pressure.

Records: Reference images, class tallies, raw maturity code and handling log.

Hold and release: For standard claim use P02 selected style/grade; otherwise buyer-signed class limit.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen cauliflower P02 with its declared style, exact sample unit, defect factor, selected grade and table.

Sources: P02: USDA voluntary Frozen Cauliflower standard, effective 1996-09-26; use only selected style/grade/form

Strings and fibre

Method D07-01 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Edible background pod fiber versus objectionable string along suture, assessed after cooked preparation; P04 distinguishes quality factors by character.

Sample state: Frozen visual and approved cooked split for mouthfeel; do not infer cook character from raw pod alone.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring green/wax type and whole, cut, short-cut or French style. USDA P04 requires separate 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample-unit assessment and selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Pull suture string from marked units, cook matched coded samples per agreed use, and score fibrous bite against P04 §52.2325(h) descriptions.

Calculation and reporting: P1 cooked application: objectionably fibrous tested countable pieces / all cooked tested pieces × 100%, with signed bite anchor and five-unit count results. For a P04 claim, use exact §52.2325 character/fiber definitions and style-specific 400-unit non-French or 500 g French single-unit basis plus applicable grade table; do not equate the P1 ratio to P04 acceptance.

Product control response: Select younger pods, improve string trimming and sort mature beans.

Records: Coded cooked conditions, string photos, unit tallies and raw maturity.

Hold and release: Use P04 only for green/wax bean declared style/grade; application rejection needs signed threshold.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen green/wax bean P04 with its declared type/style, exact sample unit, selected grade and table.

Sources: P04: USDA voluntary green/wax bean standard, effective 1996-08-19; excludes peas

Short pieces

Method D07-02 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: A short piece is defined separately for whole versus cut green/wax beans by P04 §52.2325(k); French style has a different weight-based method.

Sample state: Frozen pieces sorted by declared style.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring green/wax type and whole, cut, short-cut or French style. USDA P04 requires separate 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample-unit assessment and selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Identify P04 style. Measure along longest dimension parallel to suture: whole unit <44 mm is short; cut unit <13 mm is short under §52.2325(k). French-style small/odd piece uses <19 mm or nonconforming longitudinal-cut appearance under §52.2325(n), separately. Preserve style-specific denominators and do not import cut threshold to short-cut/French without the selected table.

Calculation and reporting: P1 whole/cut short count / all eligible same-style countable units × 100%; French small/odd mass or count only as signed basis. For P04 grade, record exact 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample unit and table result separately.

Product control response: Adjust cutter length and screen rejects; segregate short-cut style intentionally sold as such.

Records: Declared style, length readings, count, cutter setting and P04 version.

Hold and release: P04 table only with selected style/grade and sampling plan; otherwise signed contract band.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen green/wax bean P04 with its declared type/style, exact sample unit, selected grade and table.

Sources: P04: USDA voluntary green/wax bean standard, effective 1996-08-19; excludes peas

Stem ends

Method D07-03 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Attached stem end and detached stem material are distinct; detached stems cannot be charged again to a pod unit.

Sample state: Frozen whole/cut green or wax beans, before cooking.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring green/wax type and whole, cut, short-cut or French style. USDA P04 requires separate 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample-unit assessment and selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Inspect ends of counted pods; collect loose stems separately; photograph ambiguous tips against reference.

Calculation and reporting: P1: stem-bearing countable bean units / all eligible countable bean units × 100%; detached stem mass g / actual examined frozen food mass g × 100%. Record five separate and pooled results; one detached stem is not counted as an attached-stem defect. P04 factor/tolerance is evaluated only in its selected style/grade table and sample unit.

Product control response: Tune stemming machine and follow with optical/manual sort.

Records: End photos, unit count, detached fraction and stemmer adjustment record.

Hold and release: Use P04 stem factor/table only in correct style/grade basis; otherwise signed rule with no double count.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen green/wax bean P04 with its declared type/style, exact sample unit, selected grade and table.

Sources: P04: USDA voluntary green/wax bean standard, effective 1996-08-19; excludes peas

Maturity and seed development

Method D07-04 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Overmature pod with weak flesh or mealy cooked seeds, separate from normal visible seed shape.

Sample state: Frozen cross-section and approved cooked split; distinguish round/flat type in P04.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring green/wax type and whole, cut, short-cut or French style. USDA P04 requires separate 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample-unit assessment and selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Select an equal fixed count or mass of each of five frozen units before inspection; note round/flat and whole/cut/French style. Document approved cook method, endpoint and serving temperature; cut a fixed subset for seed development, then score tenderness/mealiness blind against signed reference.

Calculation and reporting: P1 overmature-character count / all cooked evaluated countable pieces × 100% with five-unit and pooled counts; seed-development class and shear N reported separately. P04 grade is separate style/type-specific factor/table assessment.

Product control response: Tighten harvest window and raw-pod sorting; avoid mixing maturity lots.

Records: Type, seed cross-sections, coded cook and panel/force results.

Hold and release: P04 grade claim requires type/style/grade selection; customer bite rule signed separately.

Source applicability: GreenLand P1 contract method unless explicitly assessed under USDA AMS frozen green/wax bean P04 with its declared type/style, exact sample unit, selected grade and table.

Sources: P04: USDA voluntary green/wax bean standard, effective 1996-08-19; excludes peas

Sloughed skins

Method D07-05 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Sloughed skin/cuticle from a green/wax bean pod versus mechanical cuts/fractures; report each separately.

Sample state: Frozen exterior plus controlled cooked split if sloughing emerges only on heating.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit contract plan after declaring green/wax type and whole, cut, short-cut or French style. USDA P04 requires separate 400-unit non-French or 500 g French sample-unit assessment and selected grade/table.

Inspection procedure: Compare pod before/after cooked preparation; isolate loose skin and annotate whether damage follows an impact/cut edge.

Insect damage and spots

Method D08-04 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Superficial pea spot is separated from insect entry/larva evidence and pathogen-like soft tissue; visual color alone is insufficient for cause.

Sample state: Frozen exterior; hygienic cut-through of all suspect and pre-agreed control kernels.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan; keep pea type and size grade separate. Use a frozen count subsample and weighed sieve fraction per unit. Bean P04 does not apply.

Inspection procedure: Photograph spot, split pea, inspect for tunnel/frass/organism and compare with sterile/non-insect stain; preserve suspect material for identification.

Calculation and reporting: Spotted kernels / all eligible inspected kernels × 100%; confirmed insect-affected kernels / same denominator × 100%; unresolved suspected insect kernels reported separately. Five unit counts and pooled rates. Preserve specimen/photo/chain of custody; QA hold persists until qualified identification and buyer disposition.

Product control response: Review field pest control, harvest sorting and optical sorter; isolate suspected infested lot.

Records: Macro images, dissection results, retained suspect specimens and traceable field/line data.

Hold and release: Any live pest/unknown hazardous material holds for qualified investigation; signed appearance limit governs cosmetic spots.

Source status: GreenLand proposed contract method; no external numerical product standard is cited.

Size distribution

Method D08-05 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Pea diameter/size class is defined by signed sieve apertures and method; count and mass distributions answer different buyer questions.

Sample state: Frozen free-flow kernels, avoiding clump force and excess thaw.

Sampling and quantity: Apply signed P1 five-unit plan; keep pea type and size grade separate. Use a frozen count subsample and weighed sieve fraction per unit. Bean P04 does not apply.

Inspection procedure: For each of five 500 g frozen units, use calibrated round-hole sieves, defined vibration/handling and tare; weigh every retained/passing fraction, reconcile to input and record aperture mm. If count distribution is requested, randomly subsample each fraction with known mass and count, then report it separately; do not infer count proportions from mass proportions.

Calculation and reporting: Mass fraction % = fraction g / total reconciled sieved g × 100 for each unit and pooled mass. If complete counts are feasible, count % = fraction kernel count / all counted kernel count × 100; if subsampled, report estimated count distribution and subsampling weights as a contract estimate. Record fines and clumps separately.

Product control response: Tune grader screens and check harvest-size blend.
