Silk and husk material

Method D09-01 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Loose corn silk, attached silk, husk leaf and broken cob core are four separate classes; kernel pericarp is not silk.

Sample state: As received frozen; sweet-corn kernels and cob ears are separate sample states; cooked aliquot only after safe-use approval.

Sampling and quantity: Use P1: five sampling positions and separate 500 g analytical units for the proposed contract pilot; preserve pack/stratum identity and use a separate matched unit for destructive tests. For P05 official cob grade, use separate four-ear or eight-short-ear sample units and its method.

Inspection procedure: For kernels spread still-frozen sample on white tray and sieve on buyer-signed mesh; collect loose silk, loose husk and cob core separately. For cob style run the separate official water-thaw route only when P05 grade is contracted; photograph each ear then aggregate attached/loose husk area and dark/readily noticeable silk strand length over the 4-ear or 8-short-ear official sample unit.

Calculation and reporting: Kernel pilot: class g / net kernel g. Cob pilot: attached/loose class g / net cob sample g and affected-ear count/total ears as supplementary observations. P05 grade: total husk square inches and qualifying silk inches across the whole official sample unit; do not grade by affected-ear percentage. Retain all five results. Pool only matching ratios by summed numerators and denominators; report non-ratio measurements separately.

Product control response: Husker/silker and trimmer settings; processor QC keeps material classes distinct. Record adjustment time and affected lot boundary; inspect pre/post adjustment material before deciding rework.

Records: Record lot/pack/harvest identity, sample weight and count, method revision, equipment calibration where used, photographs of each class, raw tally, operator/date and any rework/retest. Retain Husker/silker or sheller setup, cob-trimmer setting, freezer discharge and cold-store event record.

Hold and release: Hold affected lot for buyer-agreed class limits; reclean/regrade and resample before release; do not hide cob-core fragments in a silk total. The actual processor QC identifies and holds the affected lot/stratum, documents any permitted rework and retest, and its authorized quality manager signs release only after the signed criterion and independent safety checks pass; GreenLand coordinates buyer review.

Source applicability: P05 applies only to the corn-on-cob portion of this card and only under its exact grade route. Loose-kernel steps, analytical mass calculations and P1 are proposed buyer methods, with no USDA kernel-grade claim.

Damaged kernels

Method D09-02 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Cracked kernel retains most flesh; broken kernel loses flesh; loose pericarp is a separate skin fragment.

Inspection procedure: Inspect loose-kernel SKU frozen in one layer; use signed photos to distinguish cracks, missing-flesh broken kernels and loose pericarp. For cob SKU follow P05 water-thawed per-ear broken-kernel counts and short/regular-ear table, excluding cut-end damage as P05 directs.

Calculation and reporting: Loose kernel pilot: separate defect mass/net kernel food mass ×100. Cob grade: count broken/crushed kernels per ear and score under P05 §52.941 Table IV; record official sample size. Retain all five results. Pool only matching ratios by summed numerators and denominators; report non-ratio measurements separately.

Product control response: Sheller or cob-handling setup; compare line-side before/after freezer. Record adjustment time and affected lot boundary; inspect pre/post adjustment material before deciding rework.

Records: Record lot/pack/harvest identity, sample weight and count, method revision, equipment calibration where used, photographs of each class, raw tally, operator/date and any rework/retest. Retain Husker/silker or sheller setup, cob-trimmer setting, freezer discharge and cold-store event record.

Hold and release: Quarantine if buyer's form-specific breakage limit is exceeded; adjust sheller/sorter, then regrade and repeat sample.

Maturity and prepared texture

Method D09-03 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Kernel physiological maturity and pericarp toughness are distinct from food safety or microbial release.

Inspection procedure: Separate conventional sweet from supersweet. For P05 cob grading follow §§52.942-944 water-thaw, kernel-development and cooking procedure. For buyer comparison thaw sealed matched aliquot covered at 4±2°C to ice-free, express juice, zero refractometer with water at 20°C and temperature-compensate, then cook coded portions by signed recipe/endpoint; use two blinded trained assessors and 0-5 anchored tenderness/pericarp scores.

Calculation and reporting: Record °Brix per pack with instrument ID, calibration, sample °C and cultivar, plus assessor scores and disagreement; do not use Brix as maturity grade or calculate universal tolerance. Retain all five results. Pool only matching ratios by summed numerators and denominators; report non-ratio measurements separately.

Product control response: Processor agronomy/QA reviews harvest and blanch records; qualified safety approval precedes tasting. Record adjustment time and affected lot boundary; inspect pre/post adjustment material before deciding rework.

Records: Record lot/pack/harvest identity, sample weight and count, method revision, equipment calibration where used, photographs of each class, raw tally, operator/date and any rework/retest. Retain Husker/silker or sheller setup, cob-trimmer setting, freezer discharge and cold-store event record.

Hold and release: Release by signed use-specific texture/flavor reference and safety plan; never approve by Brix alone.

Cob length and cut ends

Method D09-04 · proposed order procedure · reviewed 17 October 2026

Definition: Cob length, ragged end, missing tip and residual stalk are separate features of cob style; not a loose-kernel criterion.

Count every applicable intact unit in selected packs where feasible; record n and any mass not countable.

Inspection procedure: For cob SKU measure every selected frozen ear from cut base to terminal tip in mm; photograph cut angle, missing tip and stalk separately. If invoking P05, select its regular/short length category and score poor trim/stalk under §52.941 after water thaw.

Calculation and reporting: Pack and combined out-of-band ear count/total measured ears ×100; length median and full range per pack. P05 ear length/style and defect units retained independently. Retain all five results. Pool only matching ratios by summed numerators and denominators; report non-ratio measurements separately.

Product control response: Processor trimmer/saw settings and style segregation. Record adjustment time and affected lot boundary; inspect pre/post adjustment material before deciding rework.

Records: Record lot/pack/harvest identity, sample weight and count, method revision, equipment calibration where used, photographs of each class, raw tally, operator/date and any rework/retest. Retain Husker/silker or sheller setup, cob-trimmer setting, freezer discharge and cold-store event record.

Hold and release: Hold and re-cut/regrade any out-of-contract cob style; identify product as cob, never apply cob standard to kernels. The actual processor QC identifies and holds the affected lot/stratum, documents any permitted rework and retest, and its authorized quality manager signs release only after the signed criterion and independent safety checks pass; GreenLand coordinates buyer review.

Source applicability: P05 USDA AMS Frozen Corn on the Cob, 8 Apr 2021, §§52.931-946: cob only; §52.936 grade sample 4 ears or 8 short ears; §52.941 defects water-thawed, husk and silk aggregated over whole sample unit, other named defects per ear. P1 cannot be substituted for an official grade claim.
