Recently, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) announced a new licensing agreement that will provide over 20 independently cultivated strawberry varieties to growers worldwide, covering Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
The strawberry breeding program at the University of California, Davis has a history of nearly 100 years, aiming to meet the needs of growers by cultivating strawberries with higher yields, better flavors, and stronger disease resistance. A total of 72 patented varieties have been launched. According to statistics, the strawberry varieties cultivated by the University of California, Davis account for about 60% of global strawberry consumption.
It is reported that the new agreement involves more than 20 varieties, covering day neutral varieties, short day varieties, and summer strawberry varieties comprehensively. The five new varieties resistant to wilt disease launched by the University of California, Davis last year are also included in the agreement. These 5 varieties not only have good resistance to wilt disease, but also have high yield and good quality.
Global Plant Genetics (GPG), headquartered in the UK, will introduce 15 traditional varieties in regions such as China, South America, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. GPG has been the main licensor of the University of California, Davis since 2018, responsible for overseeing the licensing of several recently developed varieties in these markets.
